How much does WhatsApp Business automation cost in India?

WhatsApp Business automation in India has two separate cost layers: Meta's per-message charges (roughly ₹0.86 per marketing message and ₹0.115 per utility/authentication message as of January 2026, with customer-initiated service replies free today — see the important October 2026 change below) and your provider's platform fee (commonly ₹999–₹5,000/month, or a flat per-conversation markup instead). If you want an AI-automated assistant built and maintained, budget roughly ₹40,000–₹90,000 one-time plus ₹2,000–₹5,000/month in ongoing tool costs.

Two things people usually conflate

"WhatsApp Business automation cost" is actually three different things bundled into one question:

  1. Meta's messaging charges — what WhatsApp itself charges per message, regardless of provider.
  2. Your BSP's (Business Solution Provider's) platform fee — the monthly subscription or markup charged by the company giving you API access and tools.
  3. The cost of building the automation itself — the actual workflow logic: reading messages, checking rules, replying, escalating to a human.

A lot of "WhatsApp pricing" content only covers #1 and #2. If you want an AI-automated assistant — not just a chat inbox — #3 is where most of the real cost and value sits.

1. Meta's per-message rates (India, as of January 2026)

Meta shifted from per-24-hour-conversation billing to per-message (template) billing in mid-2025, and India moved to local-currency (INR) billing in January 2026.

Message categoryRate (India)
Marketing template~₹0.86 per message
Utility template~₹0.115 per message
Authentication template (e.g. OTP)~₹0.115 per message
Service messages (replies inside an open 24-hour customer-initiated window)Free today — changing October 2026, see below

The practical effect today: if your automation is mostly replying to customers who message you first, most of your messaging is free. Costs mainly show up when you're proactively sending marketing campaigns or utility notifications. These rates change — check Meta's current official rate card before budgeting.

Important upcoming change: Meta has announced that from October 1, 2026, service messages and utility templates sent inside an open 24-hour customer-service window will also become chargeable — both are free as of this writing. If you're budgeting for late 2026 or beyond, don't assume service-window replies will stay free; check Meta's published rate card for the post-October rate before finalizing a budget.

2. Provider (BSP) platform fees

You can't access the WhatsApp Business API directly from Meta as a small business — you go through an approved provider. Typical patterns in the Indian market:

  • Flat monthly subscription: commonly ₹999–₹5,000/month for small-business tiers.
  • Flat per-conversation markup: some providers add a small flat fee on top of Meta's rate per conversation instead of a subscription.
  • Enterprise tiers: ₹8,000–₹1,00,000+/month for high-volume businesses.

Compare providers on the actual markup over Meta's published rate, not just the headline subscription price.

3. The cost of building the actual automation

This is the part that determines whether you get a genuinely useful AI assistant or just an inbox with canned replies. Realistic Indian-market range: ₹40,000–₹90,000 one-time, plus ₹2,000–₹5,000/month in ongoing tool costs — on top of, not instead of, Meta's charges and your BSP's fee above.

Putting it together: a realistic monthly total

Cost layerTypical monthly range
Meta message charges₹500 – ₹3,000
BSP platform fee₹999 – ₹5,000
Automation tool/hosting cost₹2,000 – ₹5,000
Typical total (excluding one-time build)₹3,500 – ₹13,000/month

Plus the one-time build cost of ₹40,000–₹90,000 if you want an AI-automated assistant rather than a manual chat inbox.

A concrete example

A boutique hotel gets most WhatsApp enquiries about room availability and pricing. Most are customer-initiated (free service messages). The automation checks a live booking calendar, answers common availability questions directly, and hands off anything involving a special request to the front desk. Because almost all traffic is free service messages (as of today — see the October 2026 change above), Meta's charges stay low — the main costs are the BSP fee and the one-time build to connect to the real booking calendar.

When WhatsApp automation is NOT the right first move

  • If your volume is very low. A handful of enquiries a week may mean the fixed monthly platform fee costs more than the time it saves.
  • If most traffic is relationship-based sales conversations. Automation handles structured, repeatable questions well — it's a poor fit for rapport-building conversations.
  • If you don't have a reliable source of truth to connect it to. An automation answering "is this in stock?" is only as good as the stock data it checks. Fix the underlying data problem first.

Common questions

Do I need a separate WhatsApp Business app and the API?

Yes — the free WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business API (used for automation, through a BSP) are different products. Automation requires API access via an approved provider.

Is WhatsApp automation cheaper than hiring someone to answer messages?

For businesses with meaningful volume of repetitive questions, yes typically, once the one-time build cost is paid off. For very low volume, a person may still be more cost-effective for now.

Can I start with just the WhatsApp API and add automation later?

Yes. Many businesses start with a BSP's basic inbox tools and add AI automation once they understand which questions are repetitive enough to be worth automating.

Why do costs vary so much between providers?

Different BSPs bundle different things into their fee. Compare what's actually included, not just the sticker price.
